Embracing the concept of 'releasing the potential' of Britain's youngest sailors, IBI Sailing's recently launched Team IBI (Harry Gozzett, Ollie Grogono, Hugo Andrews, Ella Stogall, Joe Burford, Freddy Grogono), was seen in action at the IOCA UK Optimist World's and European Selections held at WPNSA and Pwhelli Sailing Club over two 3 day weekends in April and May. These two events determine those children who will represent GBR this year at the World Championships and the European Championships. Wearing squad race bibs provided by Zhik and racing under the watchful eye of their coach, Ben Ainsworth, the children where supported on and off the water whilst they competed.
All too often in the Optimist fleet, parents suffer the problem of sending their young sailors out onto the race course without close assistance provided by a RIB and supporter. Whilst there is typically an armada of safety boats at events where fleet sizes regularly exceed 250, the challenge of competing at such an event can be all too much for a novice and even an experienced fleet leader needs appropriate and effective support to remain focused to attain their goals. Team IBI has been set up to provide this logistical gap, sailors are able to sign up for a seasonal nominal fee, to be supported at the big competitions. At these events, technical, practical and emotional support is provided as part of the squad by a dedicated coach. So, as well as having the camaraderie of being part of an identifiable team with shared knowledge, goals and experience, there is a healthy dose of fun!
Whilst places are limited there are few available for the 2010 season at the Inlands, Nationals and End of Seasons. If you are interested in becoming a Team IBI member contact charles@ibisailing.co.uk!
