The O’pen Bic has a fast, planing hull with an open self -draining stern and 4.5 m2 fully-battened mono-film sail that has a mast pocket, and slides onto a two piece 3.90 m mast. The sail has been designed with an open leech to give sailors maximum control and performance in windy conditions.
The O’pen Bic was conceived as a stepping stone between the Optimist and larger boats such as the 420 and Laser for children and teenagers. The concept is of an upgradable boat such that sailors can start off by buying the hull only - they can keep the rig and the rudder and daggerboard that they already have with the Optimist. Later on, they can progress to the 4.5 m2 O’pen Bic rig and foils that offer fast and powerful sailing while still remaining easy to control. Clearly, many sailors will opt for the O’pen Bic rig from the beginning.
The hull is constructed of thermoformed polyethylene (2.75 m long, 1.14 m beam and weighs 45 kg. The recommended ideal weight for sailors is 65 kg but the boat will carry an adult of up to 90 kg.
